Debate The Future of Cities

During the fourth edition of the MIASTOmovie festival, held at the New Horizons Cinema in cooperation with Wrocław Film Foundation, we screened the film Slums: Cities of Tomorrow and organised a discussion panel after it. The subject of the film and the debate concerned a vision that all of us – as inhabitants of cities – may share in the future.

The film raised the subject of favelas, slums, shantytowns and camps. It encouraged us to think whether these informal housing developments that can be found all over the world are giant communities of the poorest inhabitants or spaces of self-organisation, whose residents use their own resourcefulness to solve some of the problems plaguing their countries.

The film became a starting point for a discussion attended by invited guests: Kuba Snopek, an architect and author of the book Bielajewo. Zabytek przeszłości; Joanna Synowiec, co-founder of the NOMADA Society for Multicultural Society Integration; and Bogna Świątkowska, founder and president of the Bęc Zmiana New Culture Foundation. The meeting was moderated by Edwin Bendyk, curator of the City of the Future / Laboratory Wrocław programme.
